Update on Credit Card Swipe Fees
|
The Medical Association successfully addressed physicians' concerns about credit card swipe fees, which have been costing practices tens of thousands (sometimes over $100,000) annually. After surveying Alabama medical practices and negotiating with insurers, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama agreed to let physicians add up to a 3% surcharge when patients pay copayments or coinsurance by credit card, starting January 30, provided a non-surcharge payment option is available. This change helps offset costs that have been straining practices already facing rising expenses, workforce shortages, and inadequate reimbursement.
“Swipe fees have quietly eaten away at our ability to keep the doors open,” said Dr. Mark LeQuire, President of the Medical Association. “We appreciate BCBSAL for hearing physicians’ concerns and working with us toward a better solution. This is a positive step toward improving the environment to practice medicine in Alabama.”
